Biutiful

It’s difficult to imagine anything else which could go wrong for Javier Bardem’s character (Uxbal) in this film.

Terminally ill, small-time criminal, estranged from bi-polar wife who is sleeping with his brother.  Oh, and he’s trying to bring up two children on his own.

All of this is evident within the first 5 minutes of the film, and from then on, we battle alongside Uxbal to try to do some good with the time he has left.

The city of Barcelona is an important character in the film, but not the Barcelona of the tourist brochures.  This is the Barcelona of back streets, of immigrants and of poverty, and is far from being ‘Biutiful’.

Not an easy watch, but immensely engaging.
