Such powerful text and immense performances from Denzel and Viola really deserve to be more than this obvious adaptation of the stage play.
Washington clearly understands the play very well, and has obviously made an attempt to make this adaptation more cinematic, adding in a handful of scenes that are outside of the family home.
But for all that, it’s still very stage-y. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it. I did, quite a lot. How could you not enjoy Viola Davis and Denzel Washington delivering such great writing.
But I was left with the desire to have seen this on stage and if there is ever a performance within striking distance, I’ll be there.
